I have said this in the past, and I will reiterate myself again: Passive traffic is extremely important.
People do not place enough importance on it - yet it's of paramount importance, and I will tell you why! AdSense is bringing income to a lot of people - and the lesson here is that, it's all a numbers game.
One cannot afford to put all his hopes on a single platform (site/blog); you need to be able to change your plans at a seconds notice - if necessary. Let's assume that your website gets banned from Google or yahoo, and it no longer shows on search engines, and lets again assume that the search engine was the primary source of visitor attraction.
What then? Your traffic flow is slashed in half (If lucky) and the prospects of earning a comfortable income are no longer so real. - What do you do then?
Let's learn a lesson here. People who "Put all your eggs in one basket" are risking, and risking big time.
What I suggest is that one has a back up plan, and a real one, not a neglected plan constituting on "developing something else if something goes wrong"...but one which is already implemented from the beginning and exists simultaneously with other plans.
I will explain: Usually in the army there is an attitude to having a plan B in every situation. Say, if we are going to attack from the front this is what can happen, if it doesn't go well, we will utilize plan B, attacking from the back. Yet, while likely to use Plan A, both are simultaneously prepared - therefore I suggest that you have one, two, three or even more sites which you utilize.
If one doesn't work, fine, can always use the other two...and the good thing is, if things go to plan, you will have THREE good sites working like a wonder.
You need to create several websites instead of relying on just one in case the unfortunate happens.
However there will be times when things get tough and you start wondering whether it's all worth it. Important thing here is: NOT TO GIVE UP. Persistence is what can make or break you.
Things do not always work well, and most certainly you wont be making millions in the first month or so, perhaps you will never make millions from it (most likely), but if you persist and ensure that you maintain, update and market your sites, traffic will build up, and you will start earning a nice income, which will be very much appreciated whenever you decide to go out to the Pub you're your friends, or say, in the summer time, when you decide to check out how much money you have saved for that holiday abroad.
Its sad seeing people getting on board, trying it out for a month or so, just to leave straight after. AdSense IS NOT a get rich quick scheme. Effort needs to be put into.
Be smart and do what most businesses do: Diversify your offerings (several websites/blogs), market your sites (SEO: for more info www.webmaster-advice.blogspot.com), and upload interesting content.
The moral of the story: Have different income sources so that when a disaster happens, you'll still be able to stand it.
